In plain English
Shift4 is a payments 'roll-up' that bundles card processing with its own point-of-sale software (SkyTab) for restaurants, hotels, stadiums and casinos — it powers roughly a third of US table-service restaurants and over half of major sports venues, and even runs global payments for SpaceX's Starlink. It keeps a thin spread (~61 bps) on $209B of annual volume and has grown by serially acquiring payments and software firms — most recently the ~$2.5B takeover of Europe's Global Blue.
In simple terms
Where Shift4 sits
Shift4 is the platform in the middle: it plugs merchants into the Visa/Mastercard/Amex rails, adds its own SkyTab POS software on top, and keeps a thin spread on every payment. Its edge is owning both the software and the processing for whole verticals — restaurants, hotels and stadiums.
