Global Payments is a merchant acquirer — the plumbing that lets ~4M+ merchants take a card, tap or online payment and get paid. It never issues cards or lends; it plugs shops, software and enterprises into Visa and Mastercard's rails and keeps a thin slice of each sale. In 2025 it reshaped itself into a pure-play merchant business, buying Worldpay for ~$24.25B and selling its Issuer Solutions arm to FIS for ~$13.5B.
How Global Payments sits in the payments chain
Sponsor banks fund and settle, and Visa/Mastercard/Amex provide the rails; Global Payments' platform plugs merchants into those rails and authorizes and settles their payments, split across relationship-led acquiring, POS & integrated software, and — since 2025 — Worldpay's enterprise and e-commerce processing, serving small businesses, large enterprises and software partners.
