Knife River is a vertically integrated construction-materials and contracting company spun out of MDU Resources in 2023. It sits on 1.1 billion tons of aggregate reserves, turns that crushed rock into ready-mix concrete and asphalt, and then its own paving crews lay it down — mostly for state and local highway departments funded by federal infrastructure dollars.
One company, almost the whole chain
Most links in this chain are Knife River itself. It mines the rock, blends the binder, batches the concrete, makes the asphalt and then sends its own crews out to pave the road — so a huge share of its 'sales' are simply one part of the company selling to another.
