In plain English
Prudential Financial is a US life insurer and retirement-products giant turned global money manager. Households and pension plans pay premiums for life cover, annuities and group benefits; Prudential takes on that long-dated risk and invests the resulting 'float' — and its PGIM arm has grown into a ~$1.5T asset manager that runs money for Prudential and thousands of outside institutions. Japan, via Gibraltar Life and Prudential of Japan, is its biggest international market.
In simple terms
Premiums in, claims out, float invested in between
Prudential collects life premiums and annuity deposits, holds capital and reinsures the biggest blocks (to its Prismic venture and others), then invests the float — mostly through PGIM — to earn income while it waits years or decades to pay benefits.
